man, a delay doesn't take up much processing, and loading the effect
in real time will likely cause a bump even if you could do that.
So just automate the send and have done with it.
Alternatively, you could automate the mute on a bus containing the delay.
But the send thing will probably be smoother.
When you get it right, and if pc load is really a problem, bounce
your audio to a track, or write the effect out but this is distructive editing.
