As far as I know, Archiving a rack basically means that it won't be playing
at all; When a track is muted its effectively tracking along the the data on
the muted  track[s] alongside those tracks which arn't muted; The idea is to
reduce the CPU and RAM load of the project by just 'ignoring' any tracks
that you don't want to be playing on say a given mix, or, for example if you
want to archive some tracks of individual drum parts that  you've
mixed/bounced to a single percussion track; Just keeping the tracks archived
in case your worried at some later point that you may require to go back to
the individual parts and re-mix the percussion section.... Well that is kind
of how I understand it to work...
